Aguzzo is quite loosely related to Alessandro Butti’s and Aldo Novarese’s Augustea (Fonderia Nebiolo) from 1951, an engravers-style typeface based on the Roman capitals, notable for its triangular punctuation and enclosed figure “2”—features which are highlighted as alternate stylistic character sets in Aguzzo.
This is, however, where the similarities end: Aguzzo combines rigorously carved geometry with more transitional traits, making it stand on its own two feet (pun intended). Additionally, the upright styles’ sharp expression is mirrored in the steep 16° inclination of the Italic whose introduction of a variety of broad-nib flourishes nicely contrasts the upright styles. The typeface’s occasionally unusual letterforms, yet high degree of legibility, makes Aguzzo suited for use in a multitude of sizes and contexts.
