This page, especially with the focus on the triangular dots and the enclosed figure “2” – is what inspired Kasper Pyndt Rasmussen in the design of the Aguzzo typeface. Source

Butti also designed lowercase letters, but they were never released. According to his assistant Ennio Lavagno, they were drawn in India ink around 1951. Source

Aguzzo by Kasper Pyndt Rasmussen, 2015

Danish designer Kasper took a fresh approach to historical predecessors and, in 2015, brought his own original interpretation to light.

Aguzzo by Kasper and Martin, 2024

Around 2024, Martin from Displaay reached out to Kasper with an offer to expand the typeface originally just a Regular style – into a full family, and to suggest a few refinements. That’s how the collaboration began. And now, here’s the final result.

Kasper and Displaay revisions

At Displaay, we were mainly unsure about the terminals of the “K, k, R” letters — they’re highly original, but could also be interpreted as errors. So we suggested refining those details, along with a few other minor adjustments, like balancing the “C, c, e” letters.

Info

description

Aguzzo is quite loosely related to Alessandro Butti’s and Aldo Novarese’s Augustea (Fonderia Nebiolo) from 1951, an engravers-style typeface based on the Roman capitals, notable for its triangular punctuation and enclosed figure “2”—features which are highlighted as alternate stylistic character sets in Aguzzo.

This is, however, where the similarities end: Aguzzo combines rigorously carved geometry with more transitional traits, making it stand on its own two feet (pun intended). Additionally, the upright styles’ sharp expression is mirrored in the steep 16° inclination of the Italic whose introduction of a variety of broad-nib flourishes nicely contrasts the upright styles. The typeface’s occasionally unusual letterforms, yet high degree of legibility, makes Aguzzo suited for use in a multitude of sizes and contexts.
